Story

"Hello Mr. Death (A Love Song)" started, I suppose, with the way that the last line of the following e. e. cummings' poem has rung in my head since I first heard it:

'Buffalo Bill's/ defunct'

Buffalo Bill's

        defunct

               who used to

               ride a watersmooth-silver

                                        stallion

        and break onetwothreefourfive pigeonsjustlikethat

                                                         Jesus

        he was a handsome man

and what i want to know is

how do you like your blueeyed boy

        Mister Death

Beyond the poem's influence was my desire to reframe death. I wanted to balance our fear of death with another view, a sort of yin to the yang of the great terror.

Lyrics

HELLO MISTER DEATH (A LOVE SONG)

Hello Mr. Death, Hello Scary Face

Hello Icy Breath, Hello Big Erase, I know

You could pluck me from this world any time

Is that Lady Death I see?  Hey, you sure look fine today

Did you just wink at me? I’d like to steal you away

And take you dancing through the night

Chorus:            Mr. Death brings everybody down, down, down

                        Every time he comes around

But the Lady she gives me wings to fly

Come on Lady D, let’s ditch old What’s-His-Name

You could help me see that I don’t really need the pain

Especially when he says it’s nearly my time to go

Chorus:

We’ll dance the Taj Mahal, strut the Vieux Carre

Jump Niagara Falls, stroll the Champs Elysee

Dance with the stars across the Milky Way

Chorus:

We’ll do the hoochie coo underneath the moon above

Swim the ocean blue—is there ever time enough?

Do you think, do you think this could be love?

Story

One fall day I was walking the dog around six in the morning.  A wind blew through that was no longer an autumn breeze.  Autumn was over.

Lyrics

WHEN WINTER COMES

Chilly wind blows through the fields

Cuts me to the marrow

No way of turning back

No promise of tomorrow

When winter comes (2X)

Now the cold breath of the earth

Wraps around my heart

And everything I’ve left undone

Is too late to start

When winter comes (2X)

Chorus:              We bolt the door and spark the fire

                        The howling wind whirls by

When winter comes I call my love

And make the fire burn high

When winter comes (2X)

Bridge:               Bare trees stand black against the sky

The wind lets out a hollow sigh

In darkest night my love and I pull closer

Chorus:  Instrumental

A flake of snow upon my cheek

Lets me know winter’s here

Nothing will stand in its way

The change has come early this year

Now winter’s come (2X)

Chorus:

Story

The question remains.

Lyrics

HOW LONG?

How long, how long will this darkness last?

How many hours till night has passed?

I know the sun will rise . . .

I’m waiting for the sunrise

How many years till the truth is heard?

When will we hear the redeeming word?

I’m waiting for a light to shine

Waiting for a clear light to shine

Chorus:          Fires are burning all over this land

                        Getting closer every day

I’m the first to say I’m not a praying man

But I’m down on my knees today

How long, how long till this hatred ends?

How many years till the healing begins?

I’m waiting for the Blessed One

Waiting for a blessing to come

Chorus:          Fires are burning all over this land

                        Getting closer every day

I’m the first to say I’m not a praying man

But I’m down on my knees today

How long, how long?
